Often, the excess skin is accompanied by the abdominal muscle separation (diastasis), which causes an additional bulge in the central abdomen. The muscle tightening is performed during the same procedure in order to achieve an even slimmer body silhouette (waist).
Both women and men who have excess skin and stubborn fat on the abdomen, which they are unable to lose with regular physical activity and a well-regulated diet, are good candidates for tummy tuck. This is most common after multiple pregnancies and significant weight loss. You need to be at a stable weight before abdominoplasty as well as in good physical and mental condition.
For women, I also advise that you have completed your pregnancies. There may be concomitant abdominal wall weakness and abdominal muscles separation, which further increases the abdominal bulge. If you are experiencing these problems, you may be a good candidate for abdominal contouring.
The procedure is often combined with liposuction of the flanks, as this leads to a better result and a more harmonious shape of the waist area, narrower hips, and thus a more feminine figure (hourglass shape). In most cases, I use VASER liposuction, as the recovery is faster, safer and the results are visible sooner after this method. With liposuction, the natural lines of the abdominal muscles can be accentuated, giving the appearance of a slightly more athletic or defined abdominal area (line 11).
Mothers who want to feel confident in their bodies again and to have the body they had before pregnancies often decide to have their breasts reshaped, e.g. breast lift, breast augmentation or breast reduction, at the same time. A surgery customized to your needs is called a mommy makeover.
Addressing multiple areas in single surgery further contributes to the harmonious shape of the body as a whole. The price of the procedure(s) varies depending on your preference, but in the case of combined procedures or the so-called mommy makeover, the price is lower. The advantage of this type of procedure is the satisfaction on several parts of the body, harmonious body shape, a one-off recovery and a one-off cost of the procedure.
Mini tummy tuck involves the removal of loose skin and subcutaneous fat, including stretch marks in the abdominal area below the belly button only. The belly button does not need to be repositioned during this procedure and consequently there is no scar around the navel. In this case, the scar is shorter and also runs along the lower abdomen and is hidden under the underwear. The procedure is usually combined with minor liposuction of the flanks and abdomen to accentuate the natural lines of the abdominal muscles, thus further creating a more feminine, attractive and defined figure (hourglass shape).
In contrast to full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck focuses on the lower abdominal area below the belly button. It is suitable for individuals with localized concerns in this area. While the results of a mini tummy tuck are more limited, it can still provide improvement in the lower abdominal contour, resulting in a flatter and more toned appearance.
Full tummy tuck involves the excision of excess skin and fatty tissue with repositioning the belly button. If there is an associated separation of the abdominal muscles, this is restored by suturing the abdominal muscle sheaths or muscle tightening. The scar in a full abdominoplasty is located on the lower abdomen running from one side of the flank to the other and is hidden under the underwear. Due to the repositioning of the belly button, the scar also runs around the belly button. The procedure is usually combined with liposuction of the flanks and abdomen to accentuate the natural lines of the abdominal muscles, thus further creating a more feminine, attractive and defined figure (hourglass shape).
The results of a full tummy tuck are generally more significant compared to a mini tummy tuck. A full tummy tuck addresses excess skin and fat in both the lower and middle abdominal area, as well as abdominal muscle laxity. This can result in a flatter, more toned, and contoured abdomen.
The removal of excess fat and loose skin on the abdomen is often combined with other body contouring procedures, also known as mommy makeover. Most often the removal of excess skin on the abdomen is combined with breast procedures such as breast reduction, breast lift, breast augmentation or liposuction. In this way, we can restore an even more harmonious body as a whole.
It's important to note that the specific results of all procedures can vary depending on individual factors such as the amount of excess skin and fat, the condition of the abdominal muscles, and the patient's overall body shape.
Let me explain the procedure in a few steps
Immediately after the surgery you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be closely monitored by medical staff. You may have drains placed to collect excess fluid, and you will be wearing compression garments to support the healing process.
In the first few days you will likely experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the abdominal area. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage any pain or discomfort. It is important to rest and avoid any strenuous activities during this time.
In the first week you will need to take time off work and limit physical activities.
During the first few weeks swelling and bruising will gradually subside, and you may start feeling more comfortable. You will start the lymphatic massage. However, you should still avoid any strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects.
In the first few months you should gradually resume light exercises and activities. It may take several months for the swelling to completely resolve, and the final results of the surgery may not be fully visible until this time.
To help you recover as smoothly as possible and to reduce the chance of complications, the postoperative instructions are summarized below:
Some possible complications of a tummy tuck include:
It is important to note that serious complications are rare, and most individuals have a smooth recovery from a tummy tuck. I will take precautions and provide you with detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to minimize the risk of complications. It is crucial to follow these instructions closely and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments for proper monitoring and care.
Please note that the procedure has additional risk if you are overweight, diabetic, a smoker or have a bleeding disorder. You should also be aware that tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, or the surgical removal of excess skin on the abdomen, is not a way to lose weight. A healthy diet and regular sporting activities remain the key to long-term results. I strongly recommend that you continue with healthy lifestyle also after the procedure.
