Areola size: reduces enlarged areolas to better proportion with the newly lifted breasts.

A breast lift can be performed at any stage of life

There are three degrees of breast sagging, also known as ptosis, and the degree depends on the amount of breast tissue that hangs over the crease under the breast. Are you one of them?

Are you a good candidate for breast lift surgery?

If you are bothered by the feeling that your breasts sag or have lost shape and volume, have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous or when unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease you are a right candidate for breast lift. In addition to this, your nipples and areolas can point downward, you have stretched skin and enlarged areolas and one breast is lower than the other.

Women who are happy with the size of their breast in their bra, but are bothered by the shape, appearance of the breast and the size and position of the breast areola are thus the ideal candidates.

I advise you to have a breast lift when you have already finished your pregnancies and breastfeeding. I recommend that a few months has passed since you last breastfed. If you decide to have another child after the procedure, breastfeeding after the breast lift is possible, as the breast tissue is not removed, but only reshaped and the nutrition of the mammary gland is preserved. If you are planning to have a baby in the near future, I would advise you to wait with the breast lift.

Women who are slimmer and take regular exercise and eat a healthy diet can have even bigger problems with breast deflation.

Additionally, please make sure your weight is stable before the procedure, as weight fluctuations after a breast lift can affect the long-term outcome.

What are the steps of breast lift surgery?

A breast lift or mastopexy is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about two hours.

I will explain in a few steps how the procedure is carried out:

I usually make an incision around the breast areola and vertically down towards the breast crease under the breast (inframammary fold) in a so-called lollipop type of incision, or more rarely horizontally in the inframammary fold. The shape of the incision I choose depends on the size of your breasts and the degree of sagging.
This is followed by reshaping of the breast tissue. I place the breast areola at the point of greatest projection of the breast.
This fills up the upper half of the breast and removes the excess skin.
I usually also reduce the diameter of the breast areola.
If you decide to have a breast augmentation with a breast lift, the breast implant is inserted above or below the pectoralis major muscle. This procedure is called breast augmentation with lift or augmentation mastopexy and it makes your breasts look more youthful, slightly larger and above all firmer with a fuller upper pole.
During the procedure, I decide whether to insert drainage tubes, which I always remove before discharge.
I suture the wound with an absorbable suture that does not need to be removed.
After the procedure, your breasts will be bandaged with a compression bandage or you will be fitted with a post-operative bra.

You will receive detailed instructions after surgery explaining how you will recover in your home environment. You will also be invited to a follow-up appointment a few days after the operation.

What should I expect during my breast lift recovery?

The recovery process after a breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is an essential phase that requires proper care and attention to ensure optimal healing and results. While individual recovery experiences may vary, here are some general guidelines on what to expect during the recovery period after a breast lift:

Immediately after breast lift surgery:

You will be monitored in the recovery room until you are stable.
You may experience some pain, swelling, and bruising in the treated areas.
Your breasts will be wrapped in a surgical bra or compression garment to support and protect them.
First week after breast lift surgery:
Follow the post-operative instructions regarding medication, wound care, and activity restrictions.
Avoid strenuous activities, lifting heavy objects, or raising your arms above shoulder level.
Attend follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress.

2 - 4 weeks after breast lift surgery:

Swelling and bruising will gradually improve during this time.
You may be able to return to light activities and work.
Continue wearing the surgical bra or compression garment.

4 - 6 weeks after breast lift surgery:

Most swelling should subside, and your breasts will start to settle into their new shape.
You may gradually resume more strenuous activities and exercise.
Long-term recovery:
It may take several months for the final results of your breast lift to become fully apparent.
Be patient with the healing process and follow the recommendations for scar management and sun protection.
Attend scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and address any concerns.

It is crucial to communicate openly with me throughout the recovery process and report any unusual symptoms or concerns promptly. Following my instructions and taking care of yourself during the recovery period can help optimize your results and promote a smooth and successful breast lift recovery.

To ensure a smooth and fast recovery the important points are summarized below:

After the breast lift, avoid lifting heavy loads, do not raise your arms above your head and do not rest your hands on your arms.
Take all the medication as prescribed.
We recommend resting and sleeping on your back and avoiding major physical exertion.
I advise walking around the house, you can also take short walks.
You can start showering a few days after the procedure, but keep the steristrips on.
After two – three weeks, start taking care of the scar, which will soften and fade with time.
For six weeks, you must wear a compression bra
After six weeks you can gradually resume all the activities you did before the breast lift.

What are the risks and potential complications of breast lift surgery?

While breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is generally considered safe and effective, like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications that you should be aware of. It is essential to discuss these risks with me and understand how they can be minimized. Some complications that may occur after a breast lift surgery include:

Infection: infections can occur at the incision sites or within the breast tissue. Symptoms may include increased pain, redness, swelling, or drainage from the incisions. Prompt treatment with antibiotics may be necessary to resolve the infection.
Poor wound healing: some patients may experience delayed wound healing or wound separation, particularly at the incision sites. Proper wound care and follow-up with me are essential to prevent complications.
Changes in sensation: temporary or permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation, including numbness or hypersensitivity, may occur after a breast lift. These changes usually improve over time but can be permanent in some cases.
Scarring: all surgical incisions result in some degree of scarring. While efforts are made to minimize scarring and place incisions in discreet locations, individual scarring patterns can vary. Hypertrophic scars or keloids (raised, thick scars) may develop in some patients.
Asymmetry: despite the surgeon's best efforts to create symmetrical results, minor differences in breast shape, size, or nipple position may occur. Revision surgery may be necessary to address significant asymmetry.
Changes in breast shape: over time, natural aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy may affect the results of a breast lift. Additional procedures may be needed to maintain or restore the desired breast shape.
Anaesthesia risks: general anaesthesia used during surgery carries inherent risks, including allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and cardiovascular complications. Your anaesthesiologist will monitor you closely during the procedure to minimize these risks.

The procedure will not interfere with the clinical examination of the breast in the case of suspected breast cancer, nor will it interfere with mammography, ultrasound or breast MRI.

When should I expect the results?

You must be wondering when the results will be visible. The final result after a breast lift can be seen after a few months, when the breast tissue softens, the swelling disappears and the breast drops to the desired position.

Breast lift surgery can lift the breast, but unfortunately it cannot stop aging. The force of gravity can still cause the breast to sag again to some extent after a few years. Of course, this depends mainly on the quality of your skin. You will be able to prevent further sagging if you maintain a stable body weight, wear a sports bra regularly when exercising and, if you decide to go for a breast augmentation with lift, choose an appropriate size of breast implants.
