Excess skin in the upper and/or lower eyelid area may be the problem. It can give you a tired and unhappy look to your face. In advanced cases, excess skin on the upper eyelids can even block the field of vision.
Blepharoplasty is a procedure that removes excess skin and rejuvenates and refreshes the upper third of the face. The greatest effect is achieved if the upper and lower eyelids are corrected at the same time.
Excess skin on the upper eyelids and puffiness, wrinkles or bulging in the lower eyelid area can be bothersome. Upper or lower eyelid correction can restore a fresh, rested and youthful appearance to your eyes.
Do you suffer from dry eyes, glaucoma, retinal detachment or thyroid problems? If so, during the consultation I will discuss whether eyelid surgery is right for you. The same applies if you smoke, have high blood pressure, diabetes or a bleeding disorder - all of these conditions have higher risks of complications.
Before the operation, I measure and mark meticulously how much excess skin on the upper eyelids needs to be excised.
This is followed by an injection of local anaesthetic into the upper eyelid area.
Once the area is completely numb, I make an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid, a few millimetres above the eyelashes, and carefully cut out the previously marked excess skin and, if necessary, fat pads.
If the upper eyelid area is asymmetrical, I correct this to achieve symmetry.
I suture the wound with a very fine stich and apply steristrips over it.
The incision for lower blepharoplasty is made just below the lower eyelashes (so-called transcutaneous lower blepharoplasty).
This is followed by removal or reshaping of the fatty tissue, lifting of the orbicularis muscle and removal of excess skin.
At the same time, I can also slightly raise the outer corner of the eye.
I suture the wound with a very fine stich and apply steristrips over it.
For lower eyelid correction, the incision can be made on the inside of the lower eyelid – through the conjunctiva (transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty). This method removes only the fat pads, but not the excess skin, and is therefore more suitable for younger women, who usually do not have problems with excess skin, but only with fat pads.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. You are discharged from the clinic a few hours after the procedure. Long-lasting rejuvenation and refreshment are also enhanced further if we continue with noninvasive treatments like dermal fillers and botulinum toxin.
Here are some general guidelines for blepharoplasty recovery:
It is important to follow the post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. If you have any concerns or experience unusual symptoms during your recovery, be sure to contact me immediately.
With both upper and lower blepharoplasty, the upper part of the face will look more rested and fresher. The look and expression of your gaze and face will not change, you will still look natural but more youthful.
Your eyes will look more open. You should be aware that droopy eyelid surgery cannot correct the lines around the eyes and between the eyebrows. Botulinum toxin injections are suitable for this type of problem.
This can be continued for about a month after the procedure. If you are already using this, it is a good idea to wait until its effect has worn off before proceeding with the procedure. Eyelid surgery also cannot correct dark circles under the eyes. Injectable tissue fillers are more suitable for this type of problem.
The results of blepharoplasty are typically long-lasting, providing enduring improvements to the appearance of the eyelids. While the aging process will continue, the effects of blepharoplasty can last for many years.
Some of the complications that may occur after blepharoplasty include:
It is important to follow the post-operative care instructions and attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and address any concerns. If you experience any unusual symptoms or complications after blepharoplasty, be sure to contact me promptly for evaluation and treatment.
