WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UPPER AND LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Upper blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthetic and takes one and a half hours. Let me briefly describe the procedure:

Before the operation, I measure and mark meticulously how much excess skin on the upper eyelids needs to be excised.

This is followed by an injection of local anaesthetic into the upper eyelid area.

Once the area is completely numb, I make an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid, a few millimetres above the eyelashes, and carefully cut out the previously marked excess skin and, if necessary, fat pads.

If the upper eyelid area is asymmetrical, I correct this to achieve symmetry.

I suture the wound with a very fine stich and apply steristrips over it.

Lower blepharoplasty

Unlike upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty or lower eyelid correction is more commonly performed under general anaesthesia.

The incision for lower blepharoplasty is made just below the lower eyelashes (so-called transcutaneous lower blepharoplasty).

This is followed by removal or reshaping of the fatty tissue, lifting of the orbicularis muscle and removal of excess skin.

At the same time, I can also slightly raise the outer corner of the eye.

I suture the wound with a very fine stich and apply steristrips over it.

For lower eyelid correction, the incision can be made on the inside of the lower eyelid – through the conjunctiva (transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty). This method removes only the fat pads, but not the excess skin, and is therefore more suitable for younger women, who usually do not have problems with excess skin, but only with fat pads.
